Label TextVeteran: Charles G., US Navy

Charles saw five major battles during his deployment of the US Navy. He began on the USS Mississippi in 1944 scraping the metal and paint off the deck while the ship sailed the Pacific. In an oral history taken from The Wisconsin Veterans Museum he described the discomfort of sleeping on his back in the ship’s hammocks and the decision of several of his fellow seaman to sleep on the ground. After two years of being washed around the seas, the Navy offered to send him any place he wanted to go, and all Charlie wanted was to go home to a bed.
