Label TextGary Vann is a landscape photographer based in the Sierra foothills. Adopting a style featuring simple graphics and strong details, Vann presents the natural subjects of his photographs in ways that suggest the interactions of humans upon the environment. Through this striking black and white photograph, Gary Vann illustrates the imminent threat that climate change poses to the Great Salt Lake, the largest salt lake in the Western Hemisphere. This photograph depicts the once full lake depleted because of drought, water diversion, and overconsumption, exposing toxins in the soil such as arsenic. Vann’s use of black and white and high contrast create an eerie depiction of this devastation.
