Mary CorseAmerican, born 1945

Mary Corse is a California native, born in Berkeley in 1945. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1963, and then a Master of Fine Arts from the Chouinard Art Institute in 1968. That same year, she developed a technique of mixing tiny glass micro-beads into white acrylic paint. Commonly used to brighten highway signs, the micro-beads reflect a white light that shifts based on lighting conditions and the position of the viewer. Corse became known for her ability to capture light through her use of unorthodox artist’s materials. Her pieces respond to different environments, creating an effect that can only truly be appreciated in person. Corse has exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and numerous galleries throughout LA and New York. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
