BiographyPaul Gauguin is most known for his oil paintings and was part of the art movements of primitivism and post-expressionism. In addition to his paintings Gauguin also explored woodcutting and engraving in order to create prints. Gauguin lived with Vincent Van Gough in Arles, France. During this time Gauguin created some of his most historically important paintings. Upon visiting the Caribbean Gauguin became interested in art trends outside of Europe and began to find inspiration in art from: Africa, Japan, and island cultures. In Tahiti Gauguin was extremely productive, locating his niche in primitivism. Gauguin became an influence for artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
