Roger HermanGerman, born 1947

Roger Herman was born in Saarbruecken, Germany, in 1947 and received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1976 from the Akademie der Kuenste, Karlsruhe. He moved to Los Angeles in 1977, where he began to paint monumental pieces depicting mountains, nudes, and buildings. In the late 80s, he joined the UCLA Art Department and has since been a major proponent of contemporary art in California. He tends to paint in fast and loose strokes and often repeats imagery, focusing on paint and color relationships rather than subject matter. “I don’t work from figuration or abstraction,” the artist has said, "I don’t have a narrative. The subject is always painting…” Herman has produced a tremendous amount of work throughout his career, and continues to live and work in Los Angeles. His pieces are included in many collections including the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, the Eli Broad Collection, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
