Laurie Brown was born in Austin, Texas and raised in Los Angeles. She received a B.A. in International Relations from Scripps College in Claremont, California and a M.A. Degree in Fine Arts from California State University, Fullerton. In 1978 Brown was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and in 2002 she was designated Outstanding Individual Artist of the year by ARTS Orange County. Laurie Brown's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Philadelphia Museum of Art, California Museum of Photography at UCR and the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, among others.

Brown has had one-person and group exhibitions at numerous institutions, including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Nevada Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Laguna Art Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum, Orange County Museum of Art, Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, Huntington Library and the Sezon Museum in Tokyo.

Laurie Brown's first book of photographs, RECENT TERRAINS: Terraforming the American West, was published in 2000 by Johns Hopkins University Press in association with The Center for American Places. Brown's latest book, LAS VEGAS PERIPHERY: Views From the Edge, was recently published in 2013 by George F. Thompson Publishing.
