BiographyAnn Hamilton works primarily in multi-media installation art. Born in 1956 in Lima, Ohio, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Textile Design from the University of Kansas in 1979 as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Yale School of Art in 1985. She then moved to California where she taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara, until 1991. Thanks in part to her background in textile and fiber arts, Hamilton often uses cloth as a tactile and gestural tool in her artwork. Her work often strives to engage the viewer’s senses, appealing not only to sight, but also to sound, smell, and touch. Hamilton finds verbal and written language to be as fascinating as visual language, and so her work repeatedly deals with the body and the word, the relationship between the two concepts, and also how knowledge itself is embodied in different ways. Hamilton is a highly influential contemporary American artist whose art projects, performances, and installations have been featured worldwide. Since 2001, she has taught at the University of Ohio, and she lives and works out of Columbus.
