Label TextVasquez painted El Proletariado de Aztlán in 1979 while completing his master’s degree at California State University, Fullerton. The building is a triplex on Cypress Street in the Orange Barrio, a few blocks from his family home and next door to the Friendly Center, a popular community center. The mural is a tribute to the working class, and includes portraits of farm workers, labor leaders, and members of the surrounding community; many of these figures were modeled after his family and friends.
