People and places included in the mural:
Charles C. Chapman (1853-1944)- Politician, banker, entrepreneur, pioneer orange grower, major benefactor of Chapman College (later University). The college was named after him in 1934.

Orange pickers- representative of the hundreds of community members, especially residents of the Barrio Historic district, who worked as citrus pickers and packers.

Emmett Ashford (1914-1980)- Chapman alumnus who became major league baseball’s first black umpire in 1941.

Shakespearean performers- representative of the university’s recognized excellence in theatre and the arts.

Memorial Hall (1922)- historic auditorium building in the classical style; part of the old Orange high school campus, which became the Chapman campus when the college moved to Orange in 1954.

The Rev. Marin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)- Iconic civil-rights leader; spoke to an audience of students and the public during a visit to the Chapman campus in 1961.

Marty and Judy O’Conner- Chapman alumni (2017)

Fish Interfaith Center- opened in 2004, Chapman’s Fish Interfaith Center and Wallace All Faith’s Chapel is a gathering place for all students and people of every faith path.

Katherine Bowers- Documentary Film maker.

Derrell Roberts- Chapman alumnus (1981). Co-founder of the Roberts’ Family Development Center and youth advocate.

Friendly Center- Built at 436 North Cypress St. in 1924, this neighborhood meeting spot was often referred to as the Mexican Friendly Center. It is currently a private residence.

Emigdio Vasquez (1934-2017)- Prominent Orange County muralist

Paul Guzman-Co-founder of the Orange Barrio Historical Society

The El Proletariado de Aztlán mural originally painted by Orange Muralist Emigdio Vasquez in 1979 and refurbished by his son, Higgy Vasquez, in 2014. The Mural depicts the Chicano cultural movement, including local people and places with images from Mexican and Mexican-American history.

Chapman College- View of the Auditorium building on Chapman’s old L.A. campus, which it left in 1954 to move to orange.

Golden Eagle orange crate label- C.C. Chapman’s brand of Valencia oranges, shipped nationwide.

Everett Vasquez- family member of artist, picked oranges as a youth.

Choir students-representative of Chapman’s roots in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and also of Chapman’s longtime acclaim in the field of vocal and choral music

Elie Wiesel (1928-2016)- Holocaust survivor, author of more than 60 books, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Chapman’s Distinguished Presidential Fellow who visited the university on many occasions and spoke often on the campus.

Max Goldstein- played the violin for Elie Wiesel during one of his visits to Chapman.

Schmid Gate- the welcoming “front door” of Chapman University was dedicated in 2005 due to the generosity of the Schmid Family.

Royal F. Morales (1933-2001) Chapman alumnus (1954) who became a well-known author and a popular UCLA professor teaching the Filipino-American experience.

Marco O. Moreno- Emigdio Vasquez scholar.

Larry Mendez-Chapman alumnus (1975)

Toshiko Nagamori Ito (1924-2018)- Chapman alumna (1946), educator and social justice advocate.

Jamaica Festival- the popular annual festival of the Orange Barrio community that brought neighbor out to celebrate in the streets.

Higgy Vasquez- son of Emigdio Vasquez, and artist of Visions of Chapman mural.
