Label TextMoving Forward, Looking Back: Journeys Across the Old Spanish Trail is a multidisciplinary artistic project focused on identity, based on memory, and inspired by travel. Intrigued by the expeditions undertaken by the Spanish explorers in the Southwest of the United States in the 19th century, and driven by her quest for insightful knowledge of that world and its remains, the Spanish photo-journalist Janire Najera took the Old Spanish Trail accompanied by her camera, her assistant Matt Wright, and a 1984 RV named Orwell. Rudy Sena has been living off the grid for many years at his ranch in Galisteo, a pueblo located 22 miles south of Santa Fe. This area has a rich heritage and has witnessed many cultures pass by, including the Paleo-Indians, the Anasazi, the Tewas, and later on the Spanish explorers who arrived to stay in the 1600s. Rudy is a descendant of the Spanish families that settled in this land. Today, he is considered an institution in the village because of his honest way of living, his independence, and the openness with which he welcomes people.
With support from his family, Rudy has been running the Galisteo Rodeo for over 40 years, maintaining a five-generation tradition. This small but authentic Rodeo has kept alive the working cowboy lifestyle, bringing the local community together and attracting many visitors.
The pueblo of Galisteo has often become the background to many Hollywood film productions, and in turn Rudy has participated as a supporting actor in some westerns, often cast as the bad guy.
