Daniel Mendel-Black

BiographyBorn in 1966, Daniel Mendel-Black grew up as an artist in an atmosphere thick with doubts about the future of abstract painting. Whether or not he ever consciously shared those doubts, they ripple through the work he has on view at Modernism.

In a statement on his blog, Mendel-Black refers to the paintings as products of a situation in which "there are no more rules to break." The pictures, he writes, "are intended to communicate the awkward grace of the living world ... as directly as possible."
